whakawhanaungatanga - building relationships

This taonga made by Hepa Gibbons, Rotorua & donated by Merv Martin, Te Roopu-O-Waikite 1983. The four tekoteko on the head of the intricately carved squash racket depict the four winds; Nga Hau E Wha. In 1988 Wayne Panapa & Robyn Kara had the taonga encased in a glass cabinet. In 1996 Whanganui-A-Tara contributed a carved waka huia, lined to protect the taonga & glass during its journeys to each tournament. The waka huia was made by Ted Akroyd & carved by Dennis Karauna.
